What is an ELD?
An ELD, or Electronic Logging Device, is a system that automatically records a driver’s driving time and helps manage hours-of-service (HOS) logs. It connects to the vehicle’s engine to collect data like engine status, vehicle movement, distance traveled, and total engine hours. ELDs enable law enforcement to access a driver’s HOS data via the device's display, a printed report, or by electronically transferring the information.
When did the ELD mandate take effect?
The FMCSA's ELD mandate took effect on December 18, 2017. By this date, all eligible drivers and carriers had to install either an ELD or an AOBRD in their vehicles.
